The name café au lait is derived from the French term for coffee (café) with milk (lait) as they usually have a light brown color. Cafe au lait on the skin are commonly light brown in color but can darken with sun exposure. These marks are distinct because they often have irregular edges and vary in color.

What Are CAFÉ AU LAIT?

Commonly referred to as “birthmarks” but often not present at birth, café au lait spots are a type of hyperpigmentation characterized by flat patches on the skin. Café au lait spots are harmless and normal, with some people having anywhere from one to three spots. But sometimes, these spots can indicate an underlying genetic problem.

How Does CAFÉ AU LAIT Look Like?

These spots are usually smooth, although some spots can be raised. The spots are also easily identified by their coffee-like color. Some people with café au lait spots have light brown patches, whereas others have dark brown patches. The pigment of a café au lait is evenly distributed is well demarcated with a smooth or irregular border and their shape is either round or oval.

Café au lait is commonly light brown in color but can darken with sun exposure, with a sharp border and diameter of > 0.5 cm. These marks are distinct because they often have irregular edges and vary in color. The size of café au lait spots can also vary. Spots can be as small as a half-centimeter. The spots are usually present at birth or appear in early infancy but may develop later in life.

What Causes CAFÉ AU LAIT?

The brown color of a café au lait macule is due to a pigment called melanin, which is produced in the skin by cells called melanocytes. The epidermal melanocytes of an isolated café au lait macule have excessive numbers of melanosomes (intracellular pigment granules). This is known as epidermal melanotic hyper melanosis. Multiple café au lait macules are related to several genetic syndromes.
