What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common acquired skin disorder that presents as a bilateral, blotchy, brownish facial pigmentation.

This form of facial pigmentation was previously called chloasma, but as this derives from the Greek meaning ‘to become green’, the term melasma (brown skin) is preferred. It was also known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Melasma is much more common in women than men, but men can get it too!

Melasma can be triggered by an increase of hormones in your body and highly occurs in pregnant women. Statistics show that melasma occurs in 90% of women, with around 25% of them having melasma after their pregnancies. Melasma is a common pigmentation problem for women in their 30s onwards but you don’t have to live with it, you can get rid of it!

How Does Melasma Look Like?

Melasma causes spots of discoloration on the skin of the face and body. Symptoms include brown or grayish-brown blotches, appearing typically on the forehead, chin, cheeks, upper lip, or nose. It typically occurs on the face and is symmetrical, with matching marks on both sides of the face. It can also be found on the neck and forearms.

What Causes Melasma?

The cause of melasma is pretty complex; it is considered a photo-ageing disorder in genetically predisposed individuals. The pigmentation ultimately results from the overproduction of melanin by melanocytes (pigment cells); either taken up by keratinocytes (epidermal melanosis) and/or deposited in the dermis (dermal melanosis, melanophages).

Melasma develops on the skin due to several factors:

  • Family history
  • Sun exposure
  • Hormones
  • Medications and scented products
